Easy Italian Loose Meat Hoagies Recipe

These Italian inspired loose meat hoagies are a favorite meal at our house. They’re quick, filling and fun to eat.  They’re one of those meals we often refer to as “party food.”  I couldn’t resist making an Italian version of a loose meat sandwich and piling it high on a toasted hoagie roll. It’s sort of a sloppy version of an Italian meatball hoagie cooked with onions and sweet peppers then dressed with pizza sauce.

How to Make the Best Italian Loose Meat Hoagies Recipe

  • Ingredients you’ll need to make homemade Italian style Loose Meat Hoagies: Ground beef, onion, green bell pepper, red bell pepper, olive oil, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, pizza sauce, dry Italian seasoning, oregano, salt and black pepper, provolone or mozzarella cheese and hoagie rolls.
  • Kitchen gadgets you’ll need: A large skillet, sharp knife and cutting board, measuring spoons, a large spoon for stirring and a sheet pan for placing the hoagies under the broiler in the oven to melt the cheese.
  • I recommend using hoagie rolls that can be cut on top, so they remain upright in the oven when melting and covering with gooey cheese.
  • The loose meat filling can be made in advance, and it freezes very well making for low-stress meal-time preparation.
  • You can top these hoagies using any flavor of cheese that you enjoy or have on hand. Mozzarella works equally as well as provolone. You could also use cheddar, colby jack or monterey jack cheese if that’s your jam.
  • You can adapt using any variety of bell peppers that you enjoy.
  • You can make the filling and put it into the crock of a slow cooker and keep warm until servings.
  • Serve these hoagies for casual meals and they make a tasty treat for game days, too.
  • Store leftover loose meat chilled  in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Assemble per the recipe and make hoagies for supper in a snap.

Very tasty and easy to make! Husband loved it! Followed recipe as written, but did add a shake or two of crushed red pepper for spice! Looking forward to leftovers tomorrow!

  2. Hi Melissa – This sandwich definitely looks like what the guys in this household will enjoy.. What do you recommend for side dishes. No French Fries! Thank you..

  3. Tried the Italian Loose Hoagies but changed it a bit with the cheese!

For the cheese I used melted swiss on top and packed a mixture of mozzarella, romano, parm and smoked provolone. Walmart has this, it’s called pizza blend! Only things I changed. Also, make note they taste better with the rolls toasted up good. Mine were toasted more than my fiance’s a bit and he liked mine better that way! Haha. Let’s just say these were definitely a hit!! We both loved it. Keeping this recipe for sure!! Thank you. YUMMMM

I made this for dinner tonight and it was a hit with the whole family. DELICIOUS. I’ve been trying to find a recipe to recreate a sub my dad used to order from a restaurant that closed and this was spot on.. exactly how he remembered it. This is definitely a keeper. Thanks for a great recipe!
