Easy Onion Strings Recipe

What are Onion Strings? They’re thinly sliced onions that are soaked in buttermilk then coated in a flavorful breading and deep fried until crispy. This recipe includes a bonus dipping sauce to go along with the onion strings made with sriracha ketchup. Enjoy them piled high on a burger, s a topping for salads or steak or as a topping for barbecue chicken sandwiches. Of course, they make a delicious appetizer, too! They’re crispy and golden with just the right amount of seasoning to make the flavor pop. These Onion Strings are deep fried but you can make them in an air fryer too! How to Make Air Fryer Onion Strings:

  • Preheat the Air Fryer to 350°F. Coat the basket liberally with cooking spray or brush with oil.
  • Prepare the onion strings per the recipe.
  • Spray the onion strings with cooking spray on all sides or use an oil mister to coat the breading. Arrange in the basket in a single layer.
  • Cook for 8 minutes stopping halfway through to shake the basket (or flip) coating any dry spots again with cooking spray, if needed.
  • Keep warm when cooking in batches in a 200°F oven on a sheet pan.

How to Make the BEST Onion Strings Recipe

  • Ingredients you’ll need to make homemade fried Onion Strings: Two large sweet onions, buttermilk, sriracha or hot sauce, all-purpose flour, seasoned salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, cumin, dar chili powder and peanut oil or vegetable oil for frying.
  • Ingredients you’ll need to make the Sriracha Dipping Sauce: Mayonnaise, Heinz Tomato Ketchup Blended with Sriracha OR plain ketchup, sour cream, garlic cloves, green onions, prepared horseradish, seasoned salt, smoked paprika and black pepper ground.
  • Kitchen tools you’ll need: A Dutch oven, fry thermometer, stainless steel spider or slotted spoon, whisk, measuring cups and spoons, sharp knife and cutting board, shallow bowls for the dredging station.
  • You can use classic ketchup in place of sriracha ketchup for the sauce. When doing so, add hot sauce or sriracha sauce to your taste.
  • It’s important to thinly slice the onions when making onion strings. If you have knife skills, you’re good to go. Otherwise, you can use a mandolin to slice them thinly and evenly.
  • The sauce is optional but it goes so well with these for serving. You can easily make it up to 2 days in advance then store it in an airtight container chilled in the refrigerator until serving.
  • Onion Strings are best made and served piping hot. Should you have any leftover you can reheat them in a 350°F air fryer or on a sheet pan in a 375°F oven just until crisp.

Ingredients

  • Sriracha Dipping Sauce:
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup Heinz Tomato Ketchup Blended with Sriracha OR plain ketchup
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 green onion finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 tsp prepared horseradish
  • 1/2 tsp seasoned salt
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper ground
  • Onion strings:
  • 2 sweet onions large, peeled, slice into ¼-in. rings
  • 1 ½ cup whole buttermilk
  • 1 tsp sriracha or hot sauce
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp seasoned salt
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp dark chili pepper
  • peanut or vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • To make the Creamy Sriracha Dipping Sauce: Add all sauce ingredients to a small mixing bowl and mix until thoroughly blended.
  • Store tightly covered in the refrigerator until serving. Let sit in the refrigerator overnight or at least 8 hours. (Makes 1 3/4 cup)
  • To make the onion strings: Thinly slice the onions into ¼-in. rings using a sharp knife, food processor or mandoline.
  • Place the onion slices in a large storage bag. Make sure strips are separated.
  • Pour the buttermilk and hot sauce over the onions. Seal and shake the bag ensuring the marinade covers the onion strips. Marinate in the refrigerator for 2 hours.
  • In a large bowl sift together the all-purpose flour, seasoned salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, cumin and chili pepper.
  • After the onion strips have marinated, remove the onion strips from the marinade allowing the excess to drip off. Toss the onion strips in the seasoned flour.
  • Heat peanut or vegetable oil to 360°F in a large pot or countertop fryer. Fry the onion strips until golden, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Remove fried onion strips to a paper towel lined cookie sheet to drain. Season lightly with additional seasoned salt immediately.
  • Serve hot with the creamy sriracha dipping sauce.
