While pot roasts, along with fried chicken, are classic Sunday supper fare it’s nice to take them beyond the expected flavor combination from time to time. Variety is the spice of life, right? This roast is smothered with classic Italian herbs and seasoned tomatoes. Serve on warmed hoagie rolls and it’s meal time in no-time. How to make easy crockpot Italian Beef Hoagies:

  • Meat – A chuck roast is particularly delicious when cooked in a crockpot. It results in a tender beef that pulls apart easily.
  • Sauce – Diced tomatoes, tomato sauce and tomato paste for thickening the sauce. A few drops of Worcestershire sauce adds a depth of flavor.
  • Seasonings – Dried Italian seasoning, crushed red pepper flakes, salt and black pepper. A packet of dry Italian salad dressing.
  • Vegetables -Green bell pepper and onion. You could also add fresh sliced mushrooms.
  • Bread – Buttered and toasted Hoagie rolls for serving.
  • Cheese – Finely grated Parmesan cheese.

  • Ingredients you’ll need to make homemade Slow Cooker Italian Beef Hoagies: Chuck roast, olive oil, diced canned tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, onion, green bell pepper, salt, black pepper, minced garlic, dry Zesty Italian or classic salad dressing mix, hoagie rolls and grated Parmesan cheese for serving.
  • Kitchen tools you’ll need: 6 quart or similar size slow cooker, cutting board, sharp knife, measuring cups and spoons, forks for shredding the beef and various kitchen utensils.
  • If you’d like to go the extra mile, season the roast and brown it on the stovetop in oil prior to placing it into the slow cooker. If there’s no time to do so, rest assured it will still be delicious.
  • Italian seasoned tomatoes typically come seasoned with garlic, oregano and basil. I took this into consideration when I mention the amounts for the other ingredients.
  • If you don’t have Italian seasoned tomatoes, you’ll need to adjust the amounts of seasonings to accommodate for the missing flavors.

  • Serve on warm, steamed hoagie rolls or hoagie rolls that have been buttered and toasted, the choice is yours.
  • While this beef is designed for sandwiches, you may also serve this roast alongside mashed potatoes with roasted asparagus, or over your favorite cooked pasta with a wedge salad.

Ingredients

  • 1 4 lb chuck roast
  • 1 0.6 oz package dry Zesty Italian salad dressing mix
  • 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 large  green bell pepper  seeded and thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes adjust amount to your taste
  • 1 tsp dry Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 14.5 oz diced Italian seasoned fire roasted tomatoes
  • 1 16 oz can tomato sauce
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste plus additional as needed to thicken sauce
  • 8-10 warmed or buttered and toasted hoagie rolls
  • grated Parmesan cheese for serving

Instructions

  • Spray a 6 quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Drizzle roast lightly with olive oil. Sprinkle on all sides with the zesty Italian salad dressing mix. Center roast in slow cooker.
  • Drizzle roast with Worcestershire sauce,. Arrange green pepper and onion over the roast.
  • Season the peppers and onion with salt, red pepper flakes, Italian seasoning, black pepper and garlic.
  • Pour the diced tomatoes over the vegetables then drizzle with tomato sauce
  • Place lid firmly on slow cooker. Slow cook on low for 8-10 hours or until fork tender.
  • Pour the drippings from the slow cooker into a medium saucepan. Skim the fat. Bring to a simmer and thicken using tomato paste as directed. You may thicken further with additional tomato paste.
  • Use two forks to shred beef then, return the roast to the slow cooker, ladle sauce on top and gently stir.
  • Keep warm until serving on warm hoagie rolls with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese.
