Easy Eggnog Pie Recipe
Eggnog holds a special place in the hearts of our family. My Grandma was famous for her homemade boiled custard filled with orange zest. She made it every year and I couldn’t help but, pay homage to her with my recipe for eggnog poke cake. Her Christmas parties were the event of the year, and we couldn’t wait to attend, no one ever missed. So, each Christmas I continually look for more and more ways to incorporate eggnog into our desserts. I haven’t received a single complaint to date. In my kitchen, no skimpy pies are allowed so, the filling for this eggnog pie is generous. I have a recipe for chocolate eggnog pie, you may also want to add to your Christmas desserts. How to Make the Best Eggnog Pie Recipe
- Ingredients you’ll need to make homemade Eggnog Pie: Prepared eggnog, Dream Whip (dry whipped topping mix), instant vanilla pudding, whipped topping, vanilla extract or rum extract and ground nutmeg for garnishing. For the crust you’ll need crushed vanilla sandwich cookies i.e. Vienna Fingers or Golden Oreo cookies, granulated sugar and melted butter.
- Kitchen tools you’ll need: A stand mixer or a hand mixer, large mixing bowl, medium bowl, measuring cups and spoons, a spatula or spoon and 9-inch pie plate or 10-inch pie dish.
- The eggnog filling for this pie is generous and needs to be made in a 9-inch or 10-inch deep dish pie dish. In a pinch, this could also be made in a square 9×9-inch pan.
- What is Dream Whip? Dream Whip has been around for decades. It’s a dry whipped topping mix that makes the filling of this pie truly dreamy. It’s important and shouldn’t be replaced, as it also serves to stabilize the filling. It can be found on the baking aisle of most grocery stores including places like Walmart and Target.
- Substitutions: My preference is to use crushed Vienna Fingers for the pie crust, but any similar vanilla sandwich cookie will work. You could also use gingersnaps, make a graham cracker crust with graham cracker crumbs or use vanilla wafer crumbs for a flavor twist.
- Variations: You can replace the rum extract with 2-3 tablespoons of rum. Rum extract has no alcohol and keeps this pie family-friendly while allowing the rum flavor to shine through.
- What egg nog is best for making Eggnog Pie? The flavor of this eggnog pie will only be as good as the quality of the eggnog you choose to use. It’s best to use a quality prepared eggnog. Don’t skimp.
- If you prefer to use homemade whipped cream for the top, you can. Since fresh cream isn’t as stable as whipped topping, prepare it the day you plan on serving.
- Storage and Leftovers: Store Eggnog Pie in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap chilled in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Freezer: You can freeze Eggnog Pie for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight.
