Crockpot Apple Dump Cake

Ingredients

  • 2 20 oz cans apple pie filling
  • 1 15.4 oz box Spice cake mix
  • 1/2 cup salted butter melted
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup butterscotch baking chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  • Apple Dump Cake: Spray the crock of a 6 quart oval slow cooker with cooking spray.
  • Spread apple pie filling evenly on bottom of crock.
  • In a medium bowl, mix toss together cake mix, butter, egg and pecans. Sprinkle over apple pie filling.
  • Cover opening with doubled paper towels, place lid firmly on top.
  • Cook on high for 2 hours. Uncover, let stand 5 minutes.
  • Butterscotch Sauce: Just before serving, in a small saucepan melt together butterscotch chips with heavy cream over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue until completely smooth adding additional cream to thin to your preference, if desired.
  • Serve apple dump cake warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream drizzled with butterscotch ganache.
  • Apple Dump Cake Oven: Assemble per the recipe and bake in a 13x9-inch baking dish, sprayed with cooking spray. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly. 

Notes

  • Cake Mix - Dump cakes can be adapted using chocolate cake mix, gluten-free cake mix or any flavor that you enjoy. Butter pecan cake mix is another flavor that's tasty with apples.
  • Pie Filling - You could adapt this recipe using two cans of peach pie filling or two cans of cherry pie filling. Use a quality brand of pie filling for the best result.

  • Nuts - You can use walnuts or almonds in place of the pecans.
  • The purpose of the paper towels is to absorb the condensation that forms on the lid and prevent it from dropping back onto the cake.
  • Butterscotch Sauce - The butterscotch sauce is optional but it adds another dimension to this easy apple cake. It can be made in advance, chilled and rewarmed, if desired. It will solidify when cooled so reheat it gently in the microwave or in a saucepan over medium heat. You could also use a warm caramel ice cream sauce and turn it into a caramel apple dump cake. You could also use warm caramel.
