Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground chicken
  • 1 cup Italian seasoned dry breadcrumbs or panko breadcrumbs
  • 2/3 cup finely crumbled feta cheese
  • 2 large eggs lightly beaten
  • 4 medium garlic cloves finely minced
  • 1/2 cup finely diced red onion
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 3 Tbsp chopped fresh dill
  • 2 tsp garlic salt
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp lemon pepper
  • 4 Tbsp olive oil
  • Homemade Tzatziki Sauce:
  • 2 cups plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup grated cucumber squeezed dry
  • 2 Tbsp chopped fresh dill
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4-1/2 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine ground chicken, breadcrumbs, feta, beaten eggs, red onion, parsley, dill, oregano, garlic salt, black pepper and lemon pepper. Mix until just combined.
  • Use a meatball scoop to form ground chicken mixture into 1-inch balls.
  • Heat 2 Tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add meatballs, cooking in batches turning occasionally, for 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. (Alternatively, bake meatballs in preheated oven at 400°F for 18 to 20 minutes on a parchment paper lined sheet pan. Broil to brown further at the end of baking, if desired)
  • Tzatziki Sauce: In a small bowl, combine Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, dill, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic salt, onion powder and black pepper.  Taste tzatziki and adjust lemon or salt as needed. Stir until smooth and refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Garnish with fresh dill and serve meatballs with picks and tzatziki sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Chicken - You could make these meatballs with ground turkey, ground lamb, ground pork or ground beef.
  • Red Onion - You can use shallots or sweet onion.
  • Lemon Pepper - You can use black pepper or crushed red pepper flakes and lemon zest instead.
  • Don't Overmix - Do not overmix the meatball mixture to keep them tender.
  • Cucumber - Squeeze excess moisture from cucumber for a thick tzatziki. You can use an English cucumber or classic cucumber with the peel intact.
  • Fresh Herbs - You can use fresh mint, fresh chives, fresh basil, or fresh thyme to change the flavor profile. Fresh herbs have the best flavor.
  • Greek Yogurt - You could use sour cream in place of Greek yogurt in a pinch.
  • Double Batch - This recipe easily doubles for make-ahead entertaining and meal prep.
  • Use an Instant Read Thermometer - To prevent overcooking you can test the centers with an instant read thermometer looking for 165°F internal temperature.
  • Serving Options - Serve these Mediterranean chicken meatballs alongside hummus, olives and pita chips. Make it an entree and create Greek bowls filled with veggies rice or orzo, make wraps, a Greek salad, or simply as a fun appetizer with tzatziki or greek yogurt sauce.
