Ingredients

  • 1 lb sausage spicy or mild
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1 13.4 oz tube classic refrigerated pizza bread i.e. Pillsbury or similar
  • 6 oz chive and onion cream cheese (around 2/3 of a tub) softened
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese or cheddar cheese
  • 2 Tbsp butter melted
  • 1 Tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp garlic salt divided use
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • chopped parsley for garnishing

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a large baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray or line with a silicone baking mat.
  • In a large skillet, crumble and cook the sausage and diced onion with 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt over medium-high heat for 8 minutes or just until no pink remains. Drain grease from pan and set aside.
  • Meanwhile, roll or press the pizza dough into roughly a 16x13-inch rectangle.
  • Use an offset icing spatula or spoon to spread the cream cheese from end to end leaving a 1/2-inch border. Arrange the crumbled sausage mixture on top.
  • Sprinkle the sausage with shredded mozzarella cheese. Begin to roll from the widest side of the pizza dough jelly roll style, ending seam side down. Carefully transfer the bread to the prepared pan.
  • Brush the top and sides with melted butter. Combine the Parmesan cheese with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt and onion powder. Sprinkle over the top.
  • Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Let stand 5 minutes then cut into 1-inch slices and serve.

Notes

  • Sausage: You can use spicy breakfast sausage, andouille sausage, sweet Italian sausage or chorizo in this sausage bread recipe. If using Italian sausage, layer with pepperoni for an Italian twist.
  • Pizza Dough: You can use homemade pizza dough in place of refrigerated dough. Please note, you will need to lengthen the bake time so it will bake all the way through. See how to make your own Homemade Pizza Dough.
  • Seasonings: You can use garlic powder in place of garlic salt or add a sprinkle of dried Italian seasoning and crushed red pepper flakes for spice.
  • Pizza Sauce: If you choose to use Italian sausage, you could add a light drizzle of pizza sauce or marinara sauce.
  • Cheese: You may opt to use cheddar cheese, provolone cheese or pepper jack cheese for spice.
  • Herbs: You can use fresh herbs like rosemary or chives to change the flavor profile.
