Fresh, crisp cabbage tossed in a classic Homestyle Cole Slaw Dressing is a versatile side dish you’ll come back to again and again. This easy coleslaw recipe comes together in just minutes, making it perfect for busy weeknights, backyard barbecues, and last-minute gatherings. The creamy, tangy dressing pairs beautifully with everything from grilled hot dogs and burgers to smoky barbecue, fried chicken, and more adding a refreshing crunch to any meal.

Easy Homestyle Cole Slaw Dressing Recipe
In my opinion, coleslaw is one of those timeless dishes that just works with almost anything. Around the South, you’ll see it piled high on chili dogs, tucked alongside smoky pork or beef barbecue, or served with crispy Southern fried chicken. It’s just as at home next to a humble bowl of pinto beans and cornbread as it is at a big family cookout. Honestly, the possibilities are wide open—coleslaw fits in wherever you want a cool, crunchy contrast to richer, heartier foods.
It’s also a staple at picnics and potlucks, the kind of dish people expect to see and always come back for. There’s something about that balance of creamy, tangy dressing and crisp cabbage that never gets old. It adds freshness to a plate and keeps things from feeling too heavy, no matter what else you’re serving.
Ingredients to Make Homestyle Cole Slaw Dressing Recipe
This recipe keeps things simple with a classic, homemade coleslaw dressing that you can toss with a bag of pre-shredded slaw mix straight from the produce section. It’s quick, reliable, and full of flavor without any fuss. Of course, if you prefer to slice your own cabbage and carrots for a fresher, more textured slaw, that works beautifully too.
At the end of the day, good cooking doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes the best dishes are the ones that come together easily, taste like home, and bring people back for seconds.

Recipe Variations, Tips and Substitutions
- Miracle Whip – Miracle Whip has a sweet flavor that combines with the seasonings to beautifully dress this coleslaw. You can use your favorite mayonnaise, if you prefer then adjust the sweetness to your taste.
- Vinegar– You can use white vinegar in place of apple cider vinegar.
- Make-Ahead Tip – For a time saver, this cole slaw dressing can be prepared a couple of days in advance. When doing so, place it into an airtight container and keep it well chilled in the refrigerator. Give it a good stir before tossing with the cole slaw mix several hours before you plan to serve it.
- Adjust to Taste – You can mix this dressing with one or two pound of cole slaw mis, if a more lightly dressed cole slaw is your pleasure, add more slaw mix or cabbage to the dressing and toss. If you like a heavily dressed slaw, use less.
- Stir Before Serving – Keep in mind that the vegetable ingredients will break down a bit when dressed as the salt in the dressing draws out the liquid from the cabbage. So, sometimes slaw will look under dressed until it’s had some chill time to begin to incorporate with the dressing. Give it some time and stir before making any adjustments.
Storage and Leftovers
- Leftovers – Store Homestyle Cole Slaw in an airtight container or mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Stir well before serving.
- Freezer – I don’t recommend freezing this as the dressing can break down when thawed.

Hi Vickie, you know, Pet milk was a staple in my Granma’s kitchens, too. It must be a generational thing. Thanks for sharing your memory. ♥
Thanks Melissa, for taking me down memory lane! My mother made coleslaw dressing very similar to this except she used PET evaporated milk instead of buttermilk (I have no idea why) and often used pickle juice instead of the vinegar! Yes, she was a Southern cook too! I will have to try your version!
