- Flour – All purpose flour forms the base of the breading. You could add 1/4 cup of panko breadcrumbs for even more crunch!
- Sugar – A small amount of powdered sugar (confectioner’s sugar) gives the coating a golden brown color.
- Seasonings – Granulated garlic or garlic powder, salt, onion powder, smoked paprika, baking powder and black pepper.
- Oil – Use your favorite cooking spray or an oil mister to spray the breading prior to frying. You can use vegetable oil or olive oil spray.

How to Make the BEST Air Fryer Chicken Sandwich Recipe
- Make the Marinade: Whisk together pickle juice and milk then let chicken marinate in the dill pickle brine for at least 30 minutes. This is such an important step, so don’t skip it. The longer the chicken is able to marinate in this mixture the better. This can be done overnight so it’s ready for dinner the next day. Just pop it in the fridge and keep it well chilled.
- Dry Ingredients: Use a whisk to sift together the flour, powdered sugar, granulated garlic, salt, onion powder, smoked paprika, baking powder and black pepper.
- Egg Wash: Whisk the egg with the reserved milk.
- Coat the Chicken Breasts: Remove chicken from brine allowing excess to drip off, then dip into the egg wash.
- Add to Flour: Dredge each chicken breast in the flour mixture. Coat all sides very well in flour.
- Spray the Breading with Cooking Spray or Oil: Generously coat the chicken on all sides with cooking spray or an oil mister on all sides. Place into the air fryer basket without touching.
- Heat the Air Fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
- Air Fry: Cook the chicken in the air fryer per the cook time in the recipe until golden brown, flipping halfway through.
- Build the Chicken Sandwich: Serve immediately on warm buns with mayonnaise and pickles or any of your favorite toppings.
