Tips for Making Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls

  • Kitchen Tools You’ll Need: Large oven safe skillet or cast iron skillet, sharp knife, measuring cups, measuring spoons, small bowl, medium bowl, offset icing spatula.
  • Cast Iron Skillet: These bake beautifully in a 12-inch cast iron skillet. You can use any similar size oven safe skillet or bake these in a 13-inch baking pan or baking dish.
  • Stretch the Dough: Refrigerated pizza dough can be very elastic so be patient when rolling it out into a rectangle. It may take several tries to get it to the size you need.
  • Tuck the Ends: Once the dough is filled and you begin to roll jelly roll style, some of the apple pie filling may ooze out. I typically will tuck the apple bits and pieces into the spaces between the cinnamon rolls once you’ve cut them and arranged them in the skillet.
  • Double the Glaze: The creamy vanilla glaze easily doubles, if you’d like to have extra to serve on the side. This is nice for guests, so they can add more to suit their taste.
  • When to Serve: These cinnamon rolls are delicious for breakfast, Thanksgiving brunch, Christmas morning, Fall gatherings, potluck parties, Easter and entertaining. You can also enjoy them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for dessert.

Recipe Variations

  • Dough: You can swap out frozen bread dough for the refrigerated pizza dough, if desired. Follow the package instructions for thawing the bread dough. It’s usually thawed in the fridge for several hours or overnight, then allow rise time before using.
  • Homemade Apple Pie Filling: You can skip canned pie filling and make your own from scratch. You can use honeycrisp apples, gala apples, golden delicious or granny smith apples to make it. See the Cook’s Note for detailed instructions.
  • To Make Homemade Apple Pie Filling: In a heavy bottomed saucepan cook 4 cups of cubed apple, 1/3 cup of granulated sugar, 1/2 tsp apple pie spice and 1/4 tsp of salt. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until softened. Thicken with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch dissolved in 1-2 tablespoon of cold water, repeat as needed. Cool then proceed with the recipe as written.
  • Spices: If you don’t have apple pie spice on hand, you can use the ground cinnamon plus 1/8 teaspoon of ground cloves or allspice, 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/8 teaspoon cardamom and 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger.
  • Nuts: You could add chopped pecans, walnuts or almonds to the filling for crunch.
  • Cream Cheese Icing: You could top these with a cream cheese frosting. To do so, mix together 2-4 ounces of softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, heavy cream and vanilla extract. Add more cream to thin and more sugar to sweeten until it reaches the consistency that you like.

Storage and Leftovers

  • Leftovers: Store Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls covered with plastic wrap, aluminum foil or in an airtight container, chilled in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheating: Reheat gently in the microwave or in a preheated 350°F oven or a 325°F air fryer.
  • Freezer: Freeze apple cinnamon rolls for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge and reheat just before serving.

  1. I really have more of a question can you make these using homeade dough that you would use for regular cinnamon rolls but these look so yummy I gotta try them your awesome

  2. 5 stars
these turned out sloppy as all get out, but the taste still made them a 5 star. Now, gotta figure out how to make the filling (made from scratch with apples) less sloppy and so the dough more rigid.
As for the sugar topping, I made mine from 2 oz cream cheese + 1/2 tasp butter and 3 tbsp milk… then gradually add 2-3 tsp icing sugar and a touch of vanilla. Not too sweet, and the cream cheese gives it a nice tang.

    1. If the filling is thickened properly prior to assembling, it shouldn’t liquify while baking. Perhaps next time, cook the apple filling down a bit more.

  3. They are perfect. I chopped up 3medium Granny Smith apples really fine and mixed with cinnamon and a touch of nutmeg..
The dough recipe is amazing for this recipe. Thank you

  4. I tried a simpler way with a can of Pillsbury cinnamon rolls, can of apple or other fruit pie filling on top, pour melted butter over and bake 35 min at 350. When partly cooled put topping from can over all. Sometimes I add chopped pecans.

  5. Wow, they looked great, until, I read the ingredients, pre made pizza dough, really, it’s not that hard to make REALLY GOOD dough, instead of using something substandard!!

    1. Hi Joe, I would think if you have such a strong dislike of purchased pizza dough products, you likely have a recipe for homemade pizza dough that you could adapt to this recipe instead. If not, be sure and pick up one of my cookbooks next year I have an AMAZING homemade pizza dough recipe included.

  6. In the instructions it says to cut into twelve equal pieces than stir in the apple pie spice? What do you stir it into?

    Looks wonderful!

    1. Mix the apple pie spice into the apples after you cut them up. It was in the wrong place, but it’s fixed now.
