How to Make the BEST Homemade Meatballs Recipe

  • Key ingredients you’ll need to make homemade Italian-style Meatballs: Lean ground beef, Italian sausage, onion, large cloves of garlic, dried Italian seasoning, salt, Italian seasoned panko bread crumbs OR plain panko breadcrumbs, finely grated Parmesan cheese, large eggs, olive oil, whole milk
  • Kitchen tools you’ll need: Large sheet pan with oven safe rack, large mixing bowl, meatball scoop, cheese grater, measuring cups and spoons, sharp knife and cutting board.
  • Serve these meatballs over al dente pasta, stuffed onto hoagie rolls, with picks as an appetizer or spaghetti and meatballs for an easy weeknight meal your whole family will agree on.
  • This is a great recipe for meal prep. Fully bake the meatballs and freeze them without sauce for an easy way to get dinner on the table on busy weeknights.
  • You can lighten up these meatballs using ground chicken, ground turkey or ground pork.
  • The easiest way to get meatballs that are uniform in size and shape is to use an actual meatball scoop or small cookie scoop. You can also use a 1 1/2 tablespoon ice cream scoop.
  • I baked these meatballs on top of a baking rack in a rimmed baking sheet because it allows the fat to drip off the meatballs, rather than pooling around them. If you don’t have a baking rack, these meatballs will be just as delicious cooked directly on the parchment paper. They may need 1-2 minutes less baking time. You could also use a broiler pan.
  • You can freeze baked meatballs with or without sauce. For plain meatballs, put the completely cooled meatballs in a freezer bag and remove as much air as possible to keep the meatballs from getting freezer burn.
  • To freeze meatballs in sauce, add the sauce and meatballs to a glass freezer container. Leave enough empty space at the top of the container (headspace) for the sauce to expand as it freezes.
  • Frozen meatballs store well for up to 2-3 months.
  • Store cooked meatballs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
