This Texas Trash Pie is what happens when a magic bar is stuffed to the brim with pretzels, shredded coconut, toffee and pecans and baked into a pie crust. The result is an ooey, gooey, chocolate caramel dream with the sweet and salty combination that everyone loves. This pie is so easy that even a beginner can make it, just dump and bake!

Ingredients to Make Texas Trash Pie Recipe

This copycat recipe is of the original pie from Royers Round Top Cafe pie, located in Round Top Texas. Created by the royer family, the entire filling of this pie is unapologetically rich and sweet. The rich combination of every ingredient is their signature unique pie recipe that’s become famous all across the South. It’s a dump and bake kind of Tex-Mex Trash Pie that has similar flavors and textures of a candy bar. It has the sweet and salty flavors that make it a bonafide comfort food dessert that you’re bound to be make on repeat.

  • Pie Shell – One 9-inch deep dish frozen pie crust.
  • Graham Crackers – One cup graham crackers roughly crushed into smaller pieces, not crumbs.
  • Pretzels – One cup roughly crushed pretzels.
  • Butter – 1/2 cup unsalted butter.
  • Milk – One 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk forms the filling for the pie.
  • Chocolate Chips – One cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips.
  • Coconut – One cup shredded flaked coconut.
  • Nuts – One  cup roughly chopped pecan pieces.
  • Caramel Bits – One cup soft caramel bits found on the baking aisle of most grocery stores.

How to Make the BEST Texas Trash Pie Recipe

  • Prepare the Pie Shell – Preheat the oven and place pie crust on a sheet pan to make it easier to move in and out of the oven. Set aside.
  • Crush the Graham Crackers and Pretzels – Place the graham crackers and pretzels into plastic storage bags. Seal and use the back of a measuring cup to crush into small pieces. You could also use a rolling pin to crush these two ingredients, too.
  • Melt Butter – Melt the butter in the microwave in a large microwave safe bowl. The bowl will double as a mixing bowl.
  • Mix-Ins – Once the butter is fully melted add the sweetened condensed milk, crushed graham crackers and pretzels, chocolate chips, coconut, pecans and caramel bits and stir to evenly combine.
  • Transfer to the Pie Shell – Pour the mixture evenly into the pie shell. Spread evenly.
  • Oven – Bake per the cook time in the recipe until lightly golden brown.
  • Cool – Let pie cool in the pie plate on a wire rack.
  • Serve – Slice and serve warm or at room temperature with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Recipe Variations, Tips and Substitutions

  • Chocolate Chip Variations – Try using milk chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips. You could also try switching out half to another flavor like butterscotch chips or peanut butter chips.
  • Pretzels – Try swapping the pretzels with thick sliced potato chips. If removing any ingredients, replace with equal amounts of the other ingredients in the pie.
  • Don’t Thaw the Frozen Pie Shell – When using a frozen pie crust, there’s no need to thaw it or parbake it. I’ve included how to prepare a homemade pie shell in the recipe notes and process images.

  • Pie Plate – If you don’t have a deep dish pie pan use a 10-inch pie pan.
  • How to Serve Texas Trash Pie – This pie is best served warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. So once the pie has cooled completely reheat in single servings in the microwave.
  • When to Serve Texas Trash Pie – Serve this pie for dessert when entertaining, potluck parties, game day desserts, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, July 4th celebrations or family dinners.

Storage and Leftovers

  • Storage and Leftovers – Store leftovers, covered, or in an airtight container at room temperature for 3 days. You can store in the refrigerator for about 5 days but you’ll want to bring the pie up to room temperature or reheat it by the piece, before you eat it.
  • Reheating – Reheat in single servings in the microwave.
  • Freezer – You can freeze this pie for up to 3 months. Wrap the pie in plastic wrap then cover with aluminum foil before freezing. Thaw on the counter when you are ready to eat.

Ingredients

  • 1 9-inch deep dish frozen pie crust (don't thaw)
  • 1 cup graham crackers roughly crushed into small pieces
  • 1 cup pretzels
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cups semi sweet or dark chocolate chips
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 cup roughly chopped pecans
  • 1 cup caramel bits

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Place pie shell on a sheet pan to make it easier to move in and out of the oven. Set aside.
  • Place the graham crackers and pretzels into plastic storage bags. Seal and use the back of a measuring cup to crush into small pieces.
  • In a large bowl melt the butter in the microwave. Once melted to the bowl add the sweetened condensed milk, crushed graham crackers and pretzels, chocolate chips, coconut, pecans and caramel bits until evenly combined.
  • Pour the mixture evenly into the pie shell.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes or until lightly golden brown.
  • Let pie cool for 1 hour in the pan on a wire rack. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • Using a Homemade Pie Crust: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Press pie crust into a deep dish 9-inch pie pan and crimp the edge. Line the pie crust with parchment paper.  Add the pie weights over the parchment and blind bake the crust for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside for a few minutes, then fill and proceed with the recipe. (Leave the oven on.) 

Notes

      • When using a frozen pie crust, there’s no need to thaw it or parbake it. I’ve included how to prepare a homemade pie shell in the recipe notes and in the process images.
      • Variations: Try different chocolate chips or switch to butterscotch or try swapping the pretzels with thick sliced potato chips. If removing any ingredients, replace with equal amounts of the other ingredients in the pie.
      • Store leftovers, covered, at room temperature for 3 days.  You can store in the fridge for about 5 days but you’ll want to bring the pie up to room temperature before you eat it and also gently reheat in single servings in the microwave. This pie is best warm.
      • You can freeze this pie for up to 3 months. Wrap the pie in plastic then wrap it in tin foil before freezing. Thaw on the counter when you are ready to eat.

    1. Caramel bits are soft rounds of caramel, not crunchy English toffee bits (also called bits-o-brickle here in the US). They’re also made by Kraft. If you don’t have access to them you may be able to use another soft caramel candy that’s been chopped. I haven’t tested this pie using chopped caramel squares, it may not work as well. If you Google Caramel Bits you can get a visual.

    1. The graham crackers and pretzels shouldn’t be ground into crumbs. They should be crushed into small pieces and measured. Please look at the progress shots for reference, that’s why they’re provided.

    1. You could leave it out. Please note, it will change the texture of the pie and the pie may be more on the “gooey” side and it may take longer to bake. You could possibly add quick cooking oatmeal although I haven’t tested it, specifically. If you try it either way, let us know how it goes!
