Recipe Variations, Tips and Substitutions
- Protein Substitutions – You could use ground turkey, ground pork or ground chicken in place of ground beef.
- Hash Browns – You could use frozen hash browns in a pinch but they have more moisture. Thaw the hash browns and squeeze them in a lint free kitchen towel to remove excess liquid.
- Use Refrigerated Hash Browns for Less Moisture – For this bacon cheeseburger pie, I thought it would be fun to start with a shredded potato hash brown crust so we skip the bun and pastry crust. Refrigerated hash browns work best.
- Make-Ahead Tips – You can fry and prep the bacon in advance and hold onto the drippings storing in the fridge. You can adjust the amount of bacon to suit your taste. You can also make the ground beef mixture one day in advance, then assemble the pie just before baking.
- Low-Carb Carnivore Pie – For those on a high protein, carnivore diet, you can omit the potato crust and breadcrumbs in the filling for a lower carb option. You’ll need to use sugar free ketchup and add one extra egg to bind the filling. If you have keto bread or crackers, you can use those to replace the bread crumbs.
- Butter – For extra decadence, you can grease the pie pan with softened butter prior to pressing the hash brown mixture into the pan.
- Serving Suggestions – We like this cheeseburger pie with a simple lettuce and tomato salad on the side.
- Cheese – I use classic cheddar cheese in this meat pie in keeping with the flavors of a cheeseburger. You an adapt using whatever cheese you like or have on hand. Pepper jack cheese for spice, Swiss cheese, colby jack cheese or even mozzarella cheese.
Storage and Leftovers
- Leftovers – Store leftover carnivore Bacon Cheeseburger Pie in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap chilled in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheating – Reheat the entire pie in a preheated 350°F oven or reheat in single serving portions in the microwave or an air fryer.
- Freezer Tips – You can freeze easy cheeseburger pie for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge and reheat in the oven.

Love using potatoes instead of a regular crust!
I didn’t have hash browns so I made mashed potatoes. Everyone loved it!
That’s so great to hear, thank you!
Any idea if this could be frozen prior to fully cooking as a meal prep item?
I’ve never frozen this prior to baking but you can freeze it after baking. If you try it without baking first, we’d love to hear an update!
Made this last night, and my husband who is a chef, said, “Okay – this is GOOD!” WooHoo!!
I’m so happy to hear it, thanks!
I’ve made this twice already for myself, and have enjoyed it both times. I live alone, so it’s lunch or dinner for a week. I saw this again on my Facebook memories today and put me in the mood to make it again for myself. My sister and I have been making meals for my brother and his wife, since she is unable to do anything right now. Recovering from back surgery and removal of a mass on her spine in December. Now trying to fight cancer. I want to make this for him but not cook it. Could I put it all together, leave off the pickles and the cheese from the top and Freeze it for them. I would bring over some pickles and cheese to them to put on top when they back it. I concern that if a backed it before I gave it to them. It would be dried out after the reheated
Hi Janet, I’m delighted you continue to enjoy this recipe. I’m sorry to hear of your family’s illness what a wonderful gesture to make a hot meal for them. I love your idea and while I haven’t tested it, I think you could do just as you said. When they’re ready to bake it, they could just place the toppings on and bake. Do send my very best wishes to your family.
Made this tonight. Whole family loves it! Didn’t add pickles because no one really like them.
I’m so happy you all enjoyed it, thanks!
This was good and I especially love how versatile it could be. Thank you!
I’m glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
Huge hit with the family! This is now in our dinner rotation
Thanks so much!
Made this tonight. Put in 9×13 and only added another 1/2 lb of burger and a couple extra strips of bacon. Once cooled I drizzled ranch dressing on top. It was very good. Also used bread and butter pickles instead of dill pickles. I should have added slightly more ketchup because it was a bit dry but that was because of the extra meat I put in.
I’m glad you enjoyed this!
This recipe was in Parade in the 70’s or 80’s, but it used instant mashed potatoes as the base. I’ve been looking for this – I thought it was just called “hamburger pie”. Do you have the original recipe from Parade. Thanks so much!
I’m a featured Contributor to Parade but don’t know that recipe. Perhaps search their website.
