Easy Homemade French Fries Recipe
Homemade french fries aren’t difficult to make but it does require a few steps for success. I highly recommend russet potatoes for this recipe and I like to leave the peel intact. Soaking them in cold water will remove some of the starch and then using the double fry method will give them optimum crispiness. If you have a french fry cutter by all means use it to prep the potatoes but if not, a sharp knife and chopping board will do.
How to Make the Best Homemade Crispy French Fries Recipe
- Ingredients you’ll need to make homemade French Fries: Russet potatoes, salt, chopped parsley and vegetable oil or peanut oil for frying.
- For the homemade Fry Sauce you’ll need: Mayonnaise, ketchup, chili sauce, dill pickle juice, granulated garlic, on onion powder, paprika and liquid smoke.
- Kitchen tools you’ll need: A Dutch oven, fry thermometer, sharp knife and cutting board, stainless steel spider or slotted spoon, paper towel lined sheet pan, salt or seasoning shaker.
- Russet Potatoes work best for this recipe. Choose potatoes that are similar in length for even cooking.
- You can season these french fries using salt, seasoned salt, garlic salt or Cajun seasoning.
- It’s important to soak the potatoes in cold, not warm water. This will remove some of the starch for the crispiest of French fries.
- Salt is an ingredients that’s completely subjective. What’s adequate for one person is too much for the next person. Adjust the amount to your personal taste. When making french fries, you can sprinkle with seasoning as soon as they’re removed from the oil to allow it to stick more efficiently.
- French fries are best made and eaten while they’re fresh. Should you have any leftover, spread them on a sheet pan and bake in a 375°F oven until crisp. You can also use your air fryer to crisp in just a few minutes.
- The homemade fry sauce is best kept chilled in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You can safely store it for up to 4 days.
How to Make Homemade French Fries in an Air Fryer
- Preheat an air fryer to 380° F and spray the basket with nonstick cooking spray.
- Cut the potato in half lengthwise, then into 1/4-inch slices. Cut slices into 1/4 inch thick match sticks.
- Place into a colander and rinse well with cold water. Dump out onto paper towels and pat dry.
- In a medium-size bowl, toss with 2 teaspoons vegetable oil and season with salt to taste.
- Working in batches, arrange fries in an even layer in the air fryer basket with no overlapping. Cook for 8-10 minutes turning them halfway through and spraying with cooking spray, if needed. Continue to fry for another 6-8 minutes until golden brown and crisp, 14 to 16 minutes total.
- Remove and immediately season with additional salt, if desired.
- Serve with your favorite dipping sauces.
