What is a Spiral Cut Ham?
A spiral cut ham is a fully cooked ham that has been pre-sliced. This recipe shows you how to make a fully cooked spiral ham in your slow cooker. It’s a handy technique for busy oven days in particular holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. While oven baked ham is certainly tasty, this will give you another cooking option and free up your oven space, too.
How to Make the BEST Slow Cooker Pineapple Brown Sugar Ham Recipe
- Make Pineapple Glaze – On the stovetop cook the pineapple preserves, brown sugar, 1/2 cup apple cider, Dijon and allspice. Bring to a boil then cook per the recipe until the sugar has melted.

- Transfer Ham to Crockpot – Place the spiral ham in the slow cooker on it’s side. (Make sure the ham you purchase fits into your slow cooker with the lid on.)

- Glaze the Ham – Use a basting brush to slather the ham liberally with the pineapple brown sugar glaze between each slice and on the exterior reserving about 1/4 cup to brush on at the end. Turn the ham cut side down after glazing.

- Pineapple Preserves Substitute – You can use orange marmalade, apple jelly, peach preserves or apricot preserves in the same amount in place of pineapple preserves.
- Make Your Own Pineapple Preserves Ham Glaze – In a pinch, you can also combine one 8 ounce can of crushed pineapple with 1/4 cup of granulated sugar. Simmer in a small saucepan on the stovetop for 15-20 minutes or just until slightly thickened, to replace the pineapple preserves.
- Honey – You can replace the brown sugar in the glaze with honey. When doing so, expect the glaze to be thinner. You can thicken the sauce with cornstarch slurry, if needed.
- Juice Substitutions – You can use apple cider, apple juice, orange juice or pineapple juice.
- Save the Ham Bone – If you don’t have immediate plans to use the ham bone, cool it then place it into a freezer safe bag and freeze it for a future meal. You can use it to season soup, beans, lentils and beyond!
- Char the Glaze – This step is completely optional but you can transfer the ham to a baking pan to broil and char the glaze in the oven, if desired.

I would like to know how to convert this recipe from the crock pot to the oven. Thank you!
Please see this recipe for baked ham.
I could only find a fully cooked spiral ham that wasn’t boneless and the smallest was 10 lbs. How long should I cook it?
I would still follow the recipe cooking for 4-6 hours OR until it reaches an internal temperature of 140°F.
Ok. Thank you. I’m cooking this tomorrow for Good Friday. We are celebrating Easter then instead of on Sunday due to schedules.
Happy Easter to you and yours!
Can you use a regular bone-in ham for this? (assuming it fits in my crock pot!)
You can slow cook a bone-in ham but, this is a spiral ham that’s already cooked. If you’re referencing a fully cooked ham, yes.
OMG. I bought a ham and I thought that it came with one of those brown sugar packets but it didn’t. And I forgot to marinate it in the recipe I had downloaded. So I found your recipe right before it was time to go in the oven. I didn’t have apple juice or cider but I had red wine so I use that. This was so good oh my goodness! Thank you
How wonderful, thank you, I’m so happy you found it!
Made this for a Holiday party last night.
I couldn’t find pineapple preserves so I used orange marmalade and pineapple juice. it was fantastic.
And I loved that the oven was free for the other hors d’houevres!
Orange marmalade was a terrific choice. I’m delighted you loved this one, thank you!
Do I have to use a spiral ham.?
can a big sliced ham be used?
Sure, if it’s already fully cooked like a spiral sliced ham.
I have been to 4 grocery stores today. Nobody carries pineapple preserves. I’m going to use crushed pineapple as a last resort.
That is very surprising. My local Harris Teeter, Food Lion and Walmart all carry Smucker’s pineapple preserves.
Stores vary by location and what sells in that area. Around KCMO, no two Walmarts carry the second things. They all carry the advertised sale items but other things vary.
As in every area of the country, yes.
The Pineapple ice cream topping works well.
Apricot preserves is a great substitute
Hi! I’m just getting into slow cooking, and there’s just the 2 of us. Your glaze sounds delicious. If I were to do a thick ham slice instead, in my casserole crock, do you have any idea how long it would take to heat it? TIA!
That would change the cook time considerably, and there’s really no way I could advise on that, sorry.
