All-American Apple Crumb Pie is the dessert equivalent of comfort food. Slices of fresh apples, seasoned with sugar, spice and everything nice are baked until tender smothered with a buttery homemade crumb topping. It just begs to be served with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream while still gooey and warm. Heavenly.

No matter how you slice it, apple pie is an American all-star dessert. I can’t think of one way that apples can be prepared that we don’t love. My most favorite apple desserts seem to always involve warm caramelized apples and finished with a scoop or two, of vanilla ice cream. Most likely two scoops. This apple crumb pie can also be called Dutch Apple Pie, a pie which hails from the kitchens of the Pennsylvania Dutch. How to Make the Best Apple Crumb Pie Recipe

We’re incredibly fortunate to have quality convenience items such as premade pie crusts available in most every grocery store. While pie crusts consist of simple ingredients, they tend to intimidate even experienced cooks, so it’s nice to have other options to make life simpler. A homemade pie crust or a quality deep dish frozen pie crust will work equally well for this pie. Don’t forget the vanilla ice cream!

  • Ingredients you’ll need to make homemade Apple Crumb Pie recipe: One 9 or 10 inch deep dish unbaked pie shell, sliced Granny Smith apples, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, apple pie spice, salt, butter, all purpose flour, lemon juice and vanilla extract.
  • For the crumb topping you’ll need: Cold butter, all purpose flour, granulated sugar and light brown sugar. To make the crumb topping you’ll sift together the flour, sugar and brown sugar then use a pastry blender to cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients until it resembles peas. Sprinkle over the apple pie filling.
  • Kitchen gadgets you’ll need: A sharp knife and chopping board, an apple corer and peeler, mixing bowls, measuring cups and spoons and a 9 or 10 inch deep dish pie pan.
  • If you’d like to make your own crust, checkout my Flaky Pie Crust recipe.
  • You could use a different variety or a mix of apples for this pie. Please note, different varieties of apples bake differently. Adjust the baking time as needed.
  • If the apples are tender when pierced with the tip of a knife, remove the pie from the oven to cool. If they aren’t but the top is browning too quickly, lay a piece of foil on top to prevent over browning.
  • Store leftover apple crumb pie in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
  • You can also freeze apple pie for up to 2 months, Thaw in the refrigerator and gently warm in the microwave in single servings or enjoy cold.

Made this recipe for Thanksgiving!! My husband said it was the best apple crumb pie that I made!! Thank you .. saving this one for sure!!!!

    1. Honestly it will work with either size. If you’re making the crust and have a 10-inch dish use it. I you’re using a premade frozen pie shell make it a deep dish 9-inch.
