  • A deep fryer, deep pot or dutch oven for frying the onion rings.
  • Deep-fry thermometer for monitoring the temperature of the oil.
  • One large whisk to sift the flour mixture and make the batter.
  • Shallow bowl for marinating the onion rings, shallow bowl for the flour and a large bowl.
  • Measuring cups and spoons for measuring the flour and seasonings.

Recipe Variations and Substitutions

  • Onions – I used jumbo sweet onions for this recipe. You can make onion rings out of white onions or yellow onions.
  • Veggies – This beer batter is delicious for frying zucchini and thick rounds of squash.
  • Spice – You could add a dash of cayenne pepper to the batter for extra spice.
  • Beer – When choosing the best beer to make this onion ring batter, I recommend using a beer that you like and enjoy drinking. When in doubt, a stout or lager beer both work well.
  • Does Beer Batter Have a High Alcohol Content? The batter is cooked so the majority of the alcohol content will cook out in the process.
  • Baked Onion Rings – If you’re counting calories, but still have a craving for crispy onion rings, I have a lighter oven fried breaded Firecracker Onion Ring recipe that are baked not fried.

Storage and Leftovers

  • Leftovers – Store leftover onion rings in an airtight container chilled in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Line the container with paper towels to absorb any moisture.
  • Reheating – Beer Battered Onion Rings are best made and eaten while fresh. That said, you could reheat leftovers in an air fryer or arrange on a sheet pan and reheat in a preheated 375°F oven for a few minutes to crisp for a round two meal.
  • Freezer – You could freeze leftovers for up to 1 month. Reheat from frozen in the oven.

Continue to cook for an additional 4-6 minutes or until crispy and golden brown. (Adjust times depending on how your appliance performs.)
