Beer Battered Onion Rings
These Beer Battered Onion Rings are positively addictive. They’re dipped in a perfectly seasoned beer batter then deep fried until crispy and golden brown. Once cooked, the only thing left to do is dip them into favorite your dipping sauce and enjoy.
Easy Beer Battered Onion Rings Recipe
My family are onion ring aficionados. If they’re on the menu, we order them. So, these crispy fried onion rings are a shoe-in at our house for game day munchies, as a grilling appetizer or alongside steaks, sandwiches and burgers. Many times, my boys will even pile these sky high on their burgers as if they’re a work of art. Edible art of course, but tasty nonetheless.
How to Make the Best Beer Battered Onion Rings Recipe
While deep fried onion rings aren’t on our menu weekly, once in awhile when we want to splurge, we go the deep fried route. This recipe is a perfect marriage pairing this beer batter with large sweet rings of onion.
- Ingredients you’ll need to make homemade Beer Battered Onion Rings: Two large sweet onions sliced and rings separated, buttermilk, hot sauce, all purpose flour, seasoned salt, seafood seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, cumin, beer and vegetable oil for frying.
- To make the Creole Dipping Sauce recipe you’ll need: Mayonnaise, chili sauce, green onions, roasted red pepper, minced garlic, Creole or Cajun seasoning, lemon juice and horseradish.
- When choosing the best beer to make this onion ring batter, I recommend using a beer that you like the flavor and would enjoy drinking. When in doubt, a stout or lager beer will work well.
- Does beer batter have a high alcohol content? The batter is cooked so the majority of the alcohol content will cook out in the process.
- Easy homemade onion rings are best made and eaten while fresh, so I don’t recommend making these in advance and reheating in general. That said, you could reheat leftovers in an air fryer or spread on a baking sheet and placed into a preheated 375°F oven for a few minutes to crisp for a round two meal.
- If you’re counting calories, but still have a craving for crispy onion rings, I have a lighter oven fried breaded Firecracker Onion Ring recipe that are baked not fried. For those who’d like to make baked onion rings instead.
- Can I make battered onion rings in an air fryer? While this recipe is meant to be fried, you can adapt it. Working in batches, place battered onion rings in the basket of an air fryer sprayed with cooking spray. (Spray onion rings, also.) Cook for 8 minutes at 365°F then check, shake basket and flip, if needed. Continue to cook for an additional 4-6 minutes or until crispy and golden. (Adjust times depending on how your appliance performs.)
- What are the best dipping sauces for onion rings? Serve them with a spicy dipping sauce such as Southern Comeback sauce or even Japanese Yum Yum Sauce and you can make restaurant specials in your own kitchen.

Can you use the batter for other things like fish?
If you like, sure.
Just finished eating these delicious onion rings!!
Thank you for the recipe.
I will only use this recipe, it’s that good:)
Thanks so much!
I looked at this recipe and do not see beer listed in the ingredients. Is that a mistake listing buttermilk?
No mistake, beer is indeed in the ingredients. A 12 oz beer.
What kind of beer did you use for this recipe? I know you probably don’t want to name a brand, I usually only drink Coronas.
Hi Chuck, Coronas would work fine. I typically use a darker full bodied beer but, please use what you like most.
These are the REAL DEAL!
It really doesn’t get any better than this! My all time favorite appetizer!
This quickly disappeared in my house! It was a huge hit!
These were SO good! I tried to eat just one but that was impossible! Thanks for the amazing recipe!
Can you do a dipping sauce without mayonnaise.
You can use any dipping sauce you like.
I don’t drink, so I don’t have beer readily available. Is there something I can use as a substitute in the batter?
You could substitute seltzer water but, the taste will be different.
Can I use an air fryer for this recipe?
I’ve never tested it. If you try it let us know how it goes!
I also wondered if anyone tried these in an air fryer too.
Can you recommend anything I can use other than beer for the second dip?
You can sub non alcoholic beer or seltzer water.
Can you use seltzer water for the batter as well instead of beer?
Hi Beth, sure!
What kind of oil is used when u at deep frying in a pot. I do not know which type to buy.
I use peanut oil but, it can be pricey. You can deep fry in vegetable or canola oil whichever is your preference.
