How to Make Easy Oven Fried Bacon Recipe

Bacon is a mainstay on our menu in any and every form. I must admit, I don’t enjoy frying it and have been making oven fried bacon as demonstrated in this recipe for many years. It’s a restaurant technique and one that can be adapted to a home cook situation as it doesn’t need to be watched over as closely as when you’re frying bacon on the stovetop. I also prefer the easy cleanup with less mess and splatters of grease to clean. That’s a kitchen win on a busy day. How to make Oven Fried Bacon Recipe: (Scroll down for full printable recipe card.)

  • Heat Oven – Preheat oven to 400°F.
  • Prepare Pan – Line a large baking sheet with heavy duty aluminum foil and fit with an oven safe rack.
  • Bacon – Arrange bacon slices in a single layer on the rack leaving around 1/2 inch between for air to circulate. (You can also bake bacon directly on the pan.)

How to Make the Best Oven Fried Bacon Recipe

  • Ingredients you’ll need to fry Oven-Baked Bacon: One pound of thick cut or classic cut bacon. Any amount will work.
  • Kitchen gadgets you’ll need: One large sheet pan fitted with an oven safe wire rack and heavy duty aluminum foil or parchment paper, or a broiler pan, or large rimmed baking sheet covered with foil. (You don’t have to bake the bacon on a rack, you can bake it directly on the pan.)
  • The best brand of bacon to use is your favorite brand. I’ve used this technique using Smithfield, Costco’s Kirkland Bacon, Hormel, Sam’s Members Mark brand and more. Use your favorite bacon.
  • This oven fried bacon will work for any amount of strips bacon that you need to make.
  • How long do you cook bacon in the oven? Depending on your oven I find that thick cut bacon will need to cook at 400°F for 20-25 minutes and classic bacon for around 20 minutes. It all depends on how crispy you like your bacon and everyone is different. Use these times as a guideline and adapt the time to suit your personal taste.
  • If you don’t have an oven rack, don’t worry! Arrange the bacon on heavy duty foil and bake it right on the pan. It’s really no different than frying bacon in it’s own drippings in a skillet. I’ve done it both ways with great success.
  • Don’t dispose of the bacon drippings after cooking! Drain the bacon grease from the pan, let cool and solidify and then freeze or chill in the fridge in an airtight container or mason jar until you need them. You can use the bacon drippings to give a smoky flavor to homestyle green beans, cooked cabbage or for frying potatoes and more.
  • Variations: You can brush the bacon with maple syrup and sprinkle with brown sugar for candied bacon. You can season with black pepper or ground chipotle pepper for spice.
  • Use this oven frying technique and chop cooked bacon for adding to salads, on sandwiches, enjoy it for breakfast with eggs and toast, blt, as a topping for burgers or any time bacon is on the menu.
  • Storage and Leftovers: Once you’ve cooked the crispy bacon in the oven let any leftover bacon cool, then wrap it in wax paper and pop it into a plastic Ziploc storage bag. You can store it in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer: You could also freeze baked bacon for up to 2 months.
  • Reheating Oven Fried Bacon: Reheat cooked bacon from frozen in a skillet over medium heat or reheat gently in the microwave.

  1. I always start with a cold oven, that way the fat renders better, and I usually only par cook it, that way I can finish it on the flattop..

    1. I’m wondering if you’re wanting to freeze the par-cooked bacon and then reheat it on a flattop? I find the fat renders quite easily using this preheated oven baking technique, there’s always plenty left to freeze for later use. This process is for those who don’t want a two-step process as you describe.

  2. Doesn’t it make a greasy mess in the oven? It seems a much nicer way to cook it but I am afraid of the oven when it is done!

  3. 5 stars
