Easy Technique for How to Cook Bacon in the Oven

Bacon is a mainstay on our menu in any and every form. I must admit, I don’t enjoy frying it and have been baking just like this recipe shows for many years. It’s a restaurant technique and one that can be adapted to a home cook situation as it doesn’t need to be watched over as closely as when you’re frying bacon on the stovetop. I also prefer the clean-up with less splatters and grease to clean. That’s a kitchen win on a busy day.

How to Make the Best Cooked Bacon in the Oven

  • Ingredients you’ll need to make Bacon in the Oven: One pound of thick cut or classic cut bacon. Any amount will work.
  • Kitchen gadgets you’ll need: One large sheet pan fitted with an oven safe rack and heavy duty aluminum foil or a broiler pan, or large sheet pan covered with foil.
  • The best brand of bacon to use is your favorite brand. I’ve used this technique using Smithfield, Costco’s Kirkland Bacon, Hormel, Sam’s Members Mark brand and more. Use your favorite bacon.
  • This oven fried bacon will work for any amount of bacon that you need to make.
  • How long do you cook bacon in the oven? Depending on your oven I find that thick cut bacon will need to cook at 400°F for 20-25 minutes and classic bacon for around 20 minutes. It all depends on how crispy you like your bacon and everyone is different. Use these times as a guideline and adapt the time to suit your personal taste.
  • If you don’t have an oven rack, don’t worry! Arrange the bacon on heavy duty foil and bake it right on the pan. It’s really no different than frying bacon in it’s own drippings in a skillet. I’ve done it both ways with great success.
  • Don’t dispose of the bacon drippings after cooking. Drain them from the pan, let cool and solidify and then freeze or chill in the refrigerate in an airtight container or mason jar until you need them. You can use the bacon drippings to give a smoky flavor to homestyle green beans, cooked cabbage or for frying potatoes and more.
  • Use this technique and chop cooked bacon for adding to salads, enjoy it for breakfast with eggs and toast, as a topping for burgers or any time bacon is on the menu.
  • Once you’ve cooked the bacon in the oven let it cool then wrap it in wax paper and pop it into a plastic Ziploc storage bag. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.  You could also freeze it for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat cooked bacon from frozen in a skillet over medium heat or reheat gently in the microwave.

  1. Doesn’t it make a greasy mess in the oven? It seems a much nicer way to cook it but I am afraid of the oven when it is done!
