Italian Loose Meat Hoagies
The family will come running for these Italian Loose Meat Hoagies served on warm hoagie rolls topped with gooey melted cheese.

Ingredients to Make Italian Loose Meat Hoagies Recipe
Italian hoagies are often filled with a variety of deli meats. They typically feature layers of cured meats such as genoa salami, pepperoni, capicola ham and mortadella plus provolone cheese and sometimes pepperoncini, lettuce and a variety of vegetables for added flavor and texture. This recipe for Italian inspired loose meat hoagies are filled with an Italian seasoned ground beef and tomatoes. They’re one of those meals we often refer to as “party food.” I couldn’t resist making an Italian version of a loose meat sandwich and piling it high on a toasted sub roll. This Italian hoagie recipe is similar to a sloppy joe version of an Italian meatball hoagie. The meat mixture is cooked with onions and sweet peppers then dressed with pizza sauce. Tips for Making Italian Hoagies Meat
- Kitchen Tools You’ll Need: A large skillet, sharp knife and cutting board, measuring spoons, a large spoon for stirring and a sheet pan for placing the hoagies under the broiler in the oven to melt the cheese.
- Use Top Sliced Rolls: I recommend using hoagie rolls that can be cut on top, so they remain upright in the oven when melting and covering with gooey cheese.
- Make-Ahead Tip: The loose meat filling can be made one day in advance and popped into the fridge until assembling the hoagies. It also freezes very well making for low-stress meal-time preparation.
- Easy Meal Prep: You can make the beef filling and put it into the crock of a slow cooker to keep it warm until serving. This is especially helpful on days the family is coming and going at different times.
- When to Serve: Serve these hoagies for casual weeknight dinners, family movie night, quick meals and game day snacking.
- Side Dishes to Serve with Italian Subs: You can serve these with a side of giardiniera, a chopped salad, french fries, pasta salad or plain old potato chips.

Recipe Variations
- Cheese: You can top these loose meat hoagies using any flavor of cheese that you enjoy or have on hand. Mozzarella works equally as well as provolone. You could also use cheddar, colby jack or monterey jack cheese if that’s your jam.
- Bell Peppers: You can adapt using any color or variety of bell peppers that you enjoy. You could use poblano peppers in place of green pepper for spice.
- Calabrian Chiles: You could use 1-2 teaspoons of Calabrian chiles in place of red pepper flakes.
Storage and Leftovers
- Leftovers: Store leftover Italian Meat Hoagies wrapped in plastic wrap, aluminum foil or in an airtight container chilled in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheating: Reheat the ground beef mixture in a skillet over medium heat.
- Freezer Storage: Store frozen Italian meat for up to 2 months.

After reading this I wouldn’t call it a loose meat sandwich. A loose meat sandwich has no sauce of any kind in it. I would think of the as an Italian sloppy joes
Regardless of what you want to call it….it all spells delicious!
Iowa loose meat sammies on steroids! Really like this meal a lot.
Love that, thanks!
Very tasty and easy to make! Husband loved it! Followed recipe as written, but did add a shake or two of crushed red pepper for spice! Looking forward to leftovers tomorrow!
I’m so happy you enjoyed it, thanks!
Hi Melissa – This sandwich definitely looks like what the guys in this household will enjoy.. What do you recommend for side dishes. No French Fries! Thank you..
The sky’s the limit with side dishes…pasta salad, potato salad, grilled smashed potatoes so many options.
Tried the Italian Loose Hoagies but changed it a bit with the cheese!
For the cheese I used melted swiss on top and packed a mixture of mozzarella, romano, parm and smoked provolone. Walmart has this, it’s called pizza blend! Only things I changed. Also, make note they taste better with the rolls toasted up good. Mine were toasted more than my fiance’s a bit and he liked mine better that way! Haha. Let’s just say these were definitely a hit!! We both loved it. Keeping this recipe for sure!! Thank you. YUMMMM
Sounds great, thank you!
I made this for dinner tonight and it was a hit with the whole family. DELICIOUS. I’ve been trying to find a recipe to recreate a sub my dad used to order from a restaurant that closed and this was spot on.. exactly how he remembered it. This is definitely a keeper. Thanks for a great recipe!
How wonderful, I’m so happy you all enjoyed these. Thanks so much for taking the time to let me know!
Made this tonight,very good!
Simple, flavor-exploding recipe that could become a weekly staple for me. Yummers Melissa.
