When my boys were younger, I was never quite sure if they loved the food they were eating, or the honey mustard sauce they were dipping it into. The same goes for ranch dressing. Regardless, I was happy and they’ve carried their love of dipping sauces into their teen years as well. Sauces like Japanese Steakhouse Yum Yum Sauce, Southern Comeback Sauce and copycat Chick-fil-A Sauce are regulars on our dip menu rotation. Whole grain mustard bring texture to this classic sauce and you’ll only need a medium bowl and a whisk to whip-up this honey mustard sauce in minutes. - Mayonnaise: Real mayonnaise works best, not salad dressing like Miracle Whip.
- Honey: Honey adds sweetness and gives honey mustard a smooth texture.
- Mustard: Both Dijon mustard and whole grain mustard for a broader flavor.
- Seasonings: Granulated garlic or garlic powder, onion powder and paprika.

How to Make Homemade Honey Mustard Sauce
This easy honey mustard dressing doesn’t require any cooking at all making it very simple to make in minutes. It’s one of those great opportunities to grab the kids and get them involved in making their own. When doing so, you’ll see their cooking skills expand before your eyes.
- Combine – In a medium bowl whisk together the mayonnaise, honey, Dijon mustard, whole grain mustard, granulated garlic or garlic powder, onion powder and paprika. Stir until it reaches the perfect consistency.
- Transfer to an Airtight Container – Pour the mixture into an airtight container and chill in the fridge for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Refrigerate – Store chilled in an airtight container for up to one week.

- How Long Does it Take to Make this Honey Mustard Recipe? This honey mustard sauce literally takes 5 minutes to make. The only hard part is allowing it time to chill in the fridge for the flavors to marry. You can enjoy it immediately as a dip should you choose to do so, but chill time brings all of the flavors together more fully.
- How to Serve: You can use it for dipping chicken nuggets or chicken tenders, drizzled over salmon, brussels sprouts, served as a dip for sweet potato fries, drizzled on salad, wraps or as a dip with pretzels and fresh veggies. You can also use it as a marinade and glaze for grilled meats.
- Use it as a Sandwich Spread: It can also be used as a sandwich spread. It makes a great condiment for a turkey sandwich, chicken breasts and pork chops. It also serves as a delicious dipping sauce for french fries and onion rings.

- Mustard Substitutions: Can I use a different kind of mustard? Yes, you can make honey mustard with spicy brown mustard depending on your spice preference. It will give the sauce a more intense and spicy flavor compared to the traditional honey mustard made with Dijon or whole grain mustard. You can also use stone ground mustard with brown mustard seeds.
- Use Only Dijon: You can also adapt using additional Dijon in place of the whole grain mustard called for in the recipe. Classic yellow mustard won’t work quite as well here.
- Adjust the Amount of Honey to Taste: Can the amount of sweetness in honey mustard be adjusted? You can taste and adjust the amount of honey in the recipe to suit your taste.
- Spices: You could add a dash of cayenne pepper for extra spice.
- Salt: There’s ample salt for this sauce, in the mayo. That said, depending on the brand you choose to use, it may need adjusting. Taste and add more to your taste.
Storage and Leftovers
- Leftovers: This honey mustard sauce can be stored in a mason jar or similar type of airtight container chilled in the fridge for up to one week.
- Freezer: I don’t recommend freezing this honey mustard. It can separate when thawed.
