  • Ingredients you’ll need to make barbecue Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks: Chicken drumsticks, salt, chili powder, granulated garlic, oregano, onion powder, lemon pepper or black pepper, cumin and prepared barbecue sauce. You can use any brand you prefer but a thicker sauce works best.
  • Kitchen gadgets you’ll need: A 6 or 8 quart air fryer, mixing bowl and measuring spoons. A silicone pastry brush and a pair of tongs are helpful to turn the chicken pieces and for removing from the air fryer after cooking.
  • You can use any chicken for this recipe, but I find that drumsticks work best. Depending on your preference, you can also use bone-in or boneless chicken breast or chicken thighs. Simply adjust the time depending on the size of the chicken breasts and if the chicken thighs are boneless or without the bones.
  • The amount of salt and pepper is up to you. You can adjust the amount of sodium depending on the brand of barbecue sauce used.
  • I find that 380°F works well for these chicken legs. If you want darker and crispier skin, you can increase the temperature to around 400 ˚F for a couple of minutes at the end of cooking to char. Should you choose to do so keep an eye on them to ensure they don’t burn.
  • The cooking time will vary depending on the drumsticks’ size, so check the chicken’s internal temperature with a meat thermometer to ensure that it’s cooked through. The recommended internal temperature for chicken is 165 °F.
  • To save prep time, you can definitely make this recipe ahead of time. Just mix the spices, olive oil, and BBQ sauce in two separate bowls. Coat the chicken in the seasoning mixture, and store it in the fridge covered with plastic wrap. When you’re ready, allow a few minutes on the counter then cook according to the instructions.
  • There are so many delicious variations of this recipe. You can adapt using different seasonings such as ancho chili powder or cayenne pepper for kick. You can also swap out the barbecue sauce for buffalo sauce or teriyaki sauce.
  • Make sure to coat the chicken evenly with the sauce. This will help ensure that every bite will be perfectly coated and cook evenly.
  • To avoid sticking, make sure to spray the basket of the air fryer with cooking spray before adding the chicken.
  • The best way to keep air fryer chicken drumsticks, is to store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will last for up to three days.
  • You can freeze the drumsticks. Just place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. They will last for up to three months. When ready to eat them, simply thaw in the fridge and gently reheat in the air fryer until heated through.
  • How long do you bake chicken drumsticks in the oven? About 35-40 minutes. To bake these barbecue chicken drumsticks in the oven, see the Cook’s note for instructions.
