Easy Burger Sauce Recipe
We all know the famous fast food jingle, “Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onion on a sesame seed bun.” That iconic burger made its creamy, tangy special sauce unforgettable. The good news? It’s incredibly easy to recreate a homemade big mac sauce version with simple pantry ingredients, and even better, you can tweak the flavors to suit your taste.
This quick and easy burger sauce recipe comes together in minutes with no complicated steps using pantry staples. It makes a perfect cheeseburger topping, a really good burger spread, dipping sauce for French fries, or use it as an all-purpose condiment.

Recipe Variations, Tips and Substitutions
- Mayonnaise – When making this burger sauce, I have found that real mayonnaise, not Miracle Whip gives the best flavor. If you simply prefer Miracle Whip, you can use it in the same amount.
- Garlic – I don’t recommend using fresh garlic in this recipe unless you plan on consuming it all at one time. Fresh garlic isn’t as shelf stable for longer term storage.
- Vinegar – You could use apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar in place of white vinegar.
- Onion – I’ve made this recipe using onion powder in place of the grated onion, but the combination of fresh onion and onion powder is my preference. If you want to replace it using only onion powder, it’s best to start with 1 teaspoon onion powder, then taste and adjust from there.
- Pickle Relish – You could use dill pickle relish in place of sweet pickle relish.
- Spice – If you’d like to kick up the spice level, add some cayenne pepper, tabasco sauce or your favorite hot sauce to suit your taste.
- Chill Time is Important – Allow ample time for the sauce to chill so the flavors can fully marry.
Storage and Leftovers
- Uses for Not So Secret Burger Sauce – This sauce is ideal for a plethora of uses. Slather it on hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, chicken tenders, french fries, onion rings or use it as a salad dressing. You can also use it on a roast beef sandwich in place of Arby’s Sauce with a side of curly fries.
- Leftovers – Store burger sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

I just made the recipe for dinner. Very easy and delicious. Thank you
That’s so great to hear, thank you!
This sounds really good. I’m wondering why it only lasts a week in the refrigerator??
I wouldn’t recommend keeping any homemade sauce longer than that. Prepared sauces purchased at the store contain preservatives which isn’t the case here.
taste so good thanks!
The BEST! Thank you Melissa!
Thank YOU, Laura for such a sweet note!
Great you may laugh. I used dukes mayo . When I go to va I always bring home a case .
Love it! Mayonnaise is no laughing matter. ☺
Is there a substitute for French dressing? I don’t have any and hate to buy a whole bottle for 1/3 cup. Thanks.
You could adapt using Catalina.
